SnomobileSong - the Stomperz
A recent inHouse Session produced a rock sounding version of Tom Connors
Snowmobile Song Oko downloads the words from the internet after a quick search and in the true Elton & Bernie style creates a sound track using a few hiphop drum samples to create a rhythmic loop. After experimenting with riffs using the Stratocaster Solo decides to use the Fender Jazz Bass through the Digitech BNX3 patch OctaveBass and layed down a bass groove from the guitar riff. Since this song was probably a country song knowing the artist's background the idea was to keep it between the riffs.
After 3 hours of playing bass and guitar, recording and arranging the samples the team got 2 minutes worth of song. We were up to six hours on the project's day one. It's what the lapse of time brings to the mix, the work done with the subconscience mind is very important to the next session.
The next day session we decided to loop another minute to the track. We had a little problem getting the loop points proper we had about 58sec in the loop and had a problem see the sample's endpoints in the magnified view. Then the vocalist came in and did a reference track (we keep all the best takes) He used different sounding voices and we decided on the straight and low StompinTom sound in tandem with a ocave higher performance culled from the saved tracks.
Everybody pitched in on the backup vox and we had a good chuckle listening to it back again. There was a hole for the Lead guitar and Solo just couldn't get it perfect enough then he broke a string. By then we had enough takes to piece together the PinkFloydish sound we were aiming for. As this was only the demo version we looking an end of the project which was nearing the 11th hour. I found a snowmobile sound on the internet and mixed it into beginning of the song which is a few seconds short of 3 minutes.
I never heard the original version a "Johnny Cash" style voice and acoustic guitar with a backbeat of a slap on the back of the acoustic guitar, (our apologies to
Stompin Tom Connors original version.) It was only after I mixed the demo and made an mp3 that I found the song in another search on Google. I'm sure glad we didn't listen to it beforehand or it would have never made it to the HipRok venture it became.
Here's the demo
